Consumers View Fingerprint Authentication

Sixty-six percent of consumers say they
trust fingerprint biometrics as a means of authentication
more than traditional PINs or passwords, and 68 percent say
the use of a fingerprint sensor is more convenient,
according to a survey by Melbourne, Fla.-based AuthenTec.
The survey also found that 78 percent of those who use
online banking say they would use a fingerprint sensor, if
available, to make transactions more convenient and secure.
More than one-third of those who don't use online banking
would be more inclined to do so if a fingerprint sensor was
part of the experience, according to the survey.

Consumer Confidence Index Falls in February
The Consumer Confidence Index fell to 75.0 in February, down from a
revised January reading of 87.3, the New York-based
Conference Board reported.

Good News, Bad News on Savings
While 71 percent of consumers say they have enough emergency
savings to pay for unexpected expenses, only 28 percent say
they save at least the recommended 10 percent of their
income, according to a survey released by America Saves and
the American Savings Education Council.

Identity Theft Remains Top Fraud Complaint
Category
Identity theft in 2007 topped the Federal
Trade Commission's list of consumer fraud complaints for the
seventh straight year, according to an agency report
released last week. Of the 813,899 total complaints received
in 2007, 258,427, or 32 percent, involved identity theft,
the report said. The most common form of identity theft was
credit card fraud (23 percent), followed by utilities fraud
(18 percent), employment fraud (14 percent) and bank fraud
(13 percent).
